Max Verstappen unmoved on 'punishing' F1 issue

Max Verstappen has stood by his prior criticisms of the new F1 regulations, despite the FIA and the championship implementing a suite of revisions at the Miami Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen insists the F1 regulations are still "punishing" drivers despite the tweaks to the rules implemented by the FIA ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.

The Motorsport governing body, in collaboration with the championship and its teams, sought to address some of the inherent problems experienced early in the new era of F1 through a series of refinements implemented in April.

The aim was to make qualifying more on the limit, as traditionally always has been, by lessening the need to recover energy through reducing the amount drivers can harvert and minimising the dependence on the electric element of the power unit.

Additionally, the parties wanted to smooth off some of the sharper edges of the rules, which have caused safety concerns over the extreme closing speeds witnessed through the first three rounds of the campaign.

However, the four-time drivers' champion does not believe the alterations go far enough to improve the quality of racing, and stands by his initial criticisms of the regulations, in particular the intricacies of the new power units.

Whilst the rulebook had a refresh, Verstappen's Red Bull also underwent various revisions, which saw the Dutchman enjoy a more competitive weekend at the Miami International Autodrome, where he qualified on the front row and finished fifth, despite a messy afternoon.

"My car drives a bit better, but what I said before about the regulations is still the same," the 71-time grand prix winner told media, including RacingNews365.

"You still need to go a bit slower in places to go faster. So, it's still not how I would like to see it...

"It's still punishing; the faster you go to corners, the slower you go on the next straight. That's not what it should be about.

"But at least my car is working a bit nicer, so it's a bit less stressful to drive."

When asked if he was looking forward to the next round, in Montreal, and whether there would be any more updates to the RB22, he replied: "Let's see.

"It's a completely different track, of course, to here. So let's see how competitive we can be there."
