George Russell sent a statement of intent during FP2 at the Italian Grand Prix, topping the second hour of running at Monza ahead of Charles Leclerc.
Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes was third-quickest at the Temple of Speed, with Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top five in the final Friday session.
It was a broadly quiet second free practice, with one of the biggest moments coming in the form of Lance Stroll drifting across Lando Norris in the braking zone of Turn 1, for which the Aston Martin driver will be investigated after the conclusion of track action for the day.
Max Verstappen, back in his RB22 for the first time this weekend, also had a relatively anonymous session, finishing down in ninth for Red Bull.
At this stage, Mercedes, Ferrari and also McLaren are fighting for early supremacy, with the Scuderia having topped FP1.
Leclerc had a moment late on when he spun his SF-26 around. However, the Monegasque driver managed to keep his car out of the wall and could continue on his way.
Numerous teams tried out the slipstream effect in preparation for qualifying, with the advantage of doing so far more pronounced at Monza than usual.
Gabriel Bortoleto's session ended a few minutes early, with Audi concerned that there were issues with the new power unit placed in the back of his R26.
Franco Colapinto almost lost his Alpine in the dying moments, but caught the sideways snap in impressive fashion, avoiding the barriers as he flew through the gravel trap at Turn 10, the exit of the Ascari chicane.
