Cadillac has outlined its desire to fit its own F1 engine to its car in 2029, hinting it is not swayed by the proposed move away from V6 engines soon after.

The American squad joined F1 this year as the grid's 11th team it took on Ferrari power units for its first venture in the sport.

However, it has long spoken about its aim to become a works team in the near future and invest in the development of its own power unit.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has suggested a new engine formula for 2031 consisting of V8 engines, a proposal many teams have voiced support for.

Dan Towriss, the CEO of Cadillac owners TWG Motorsports, hinted the team would be comfortable taking on both projects simultaneously.

“We’re on track for a V6 power unit in 2029,” Towriss told media including RacingNews365.

“There’s also talk of a V8 coming later as well, and I think as GM has gone on the record, we’d be very happy to build a V8 engine as well.

“And so, a lot of work, a lot of negotiation across the power unit manufacturers left to do, and we’ll see what happens.”

Towriss calls for calm over 2027 F1 engine changes

The current generation of power units has generated criticism from drivers, prompting discussions over fresh changes for 2027.

The scheme on the table is creating a 60/40 split in favour of the combustion engine over the electrical output, changing from the current 50/50 ratio.

Cadillac's engine supplier Ferrari is known to be apprehensive over such a shift, with Towriss insisting the sport must be careful not to rush into any modifications.

“With respect to the 2027 engine, it’s a work in process,” he said. “There’s a lot of work to do.

“It’s a complex negotiation, as you can imagine. One change may benefit one team or one group more than the other, and there’s a lot of work to do.

“The main thing is that, while time is of the essence, we can’t go too fast. It’s very complex.

“There’s a lot of modelling work that needs to be done to understand what these changes can achieve on track for the drivers without reopening homologation or doing too much to the chassis as well.”
