F1 CEO promises 'more intensity' as major calendar decision made

F1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali has promised fans "more intensity and drama" after the 2027 calendar expanded the number of Sprints to 10. 

The 2027 schedule dropped on Wednesday morning, with the championship featuring 10 Sprints dotted throughout the season, a rise from six in 2026.

Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Canada, Monaco, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi will all feature the shorter race, with the season-opener and season-finale in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, respectively, hosting Sprints for the first time.

Most eye-catchingly, Monaco will also host a Sprint for the first time, with six being held in the first 12 races, and four in the second 12 of a 24-grand prix schedule, including three of the final four races. 

Speaking about the new schedule - available to view here - Domenicali spoke of the promise of more of the "wheel-to-wheel action that make our sport so special."

"The 2027 calendar brings together some of the most iconic circuits and vibrant cities in the world, creating an incredible stage for another unforgettable season of Formula 1," said Domenicali. 

"We are thrilled to welcome Portugal and Turkey to the championship and to expand Sprint racing to ten events, giving our fans even more intensity, drama, and the wheel-to-wheel action that make our sport so special.

"Formula 1 continues to go from strength to strength, attracting new audiences around the globe. Week after week, the world's greatest drivers will battle on some of the most challenging tracks in motorsport, supported by F1’s outstanding teams, world-class manufacturers, and global partners. 

"Together, they create a spectacle unlike anything else in sport. As we continue this remarkable journey of growth, I want to thank our fans around the world, as their passion drives everything we do."

Domenicali issues thanks

Domenicali also offered his thanks to his FIA counterpart Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and the thousands of others who make an F1 season possible.
