Max Verstappen set the pace in the practice session in Spielberg, ahead of McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo.
Verstappen, who leads the Drivers' Championship, went to the top of the timesheets midway through the session to go 0.336 seconds faster than Ricciardo as drivers churned out the laps with rain threatening throughout the hour long session.
Alpine's Esteban Ocon was in third, with Lewis Hamilton in fourth for Mercedes.
