Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has claimed the world of F1 is "watching history in the making" with Max Verstappen's astonishing comeback in the F1 title race.
Verstappen scored his third victory in the past four grands prix by taking the chequered flag in the United States to close the gap on championship leader Oscar Piastri to 40 points, whose McLaren team-mate Lando Norris is only 14 adrift.
The four-time F1 champion's 68th win of his career completed the perfect weekend of sprint pole and win, followed by grand pirx pole and victory. It was the third time Verstappen has achieved the feat, and he is the only driver to do so.
Verstappen's run of form has turned him from a long shot after the Dutch Grand Prix, when he trailed Piastri by 104 points, to an underdog hounding the Australian and Norris.
Asked of Mekies how much he was starting to believe we are watching history in the making, speaking to the media, including RacingNews365, he said: "Watching Max driving is watching history in the making. You are using the right words.
"He surprises us every time he goes out on track. He surprised us with how much he pushes us between one session and another, how much sensitivity he has with stuff that sometimes we can see and stuff we cannot see.
"So watching him is watching history in the making. It's a fair point."

Will Mexico be a wake-up call?
Verstappen has even stunned himself with his achievement over the past four races, slicing 64 points out of Piastri's advantage.
The Dutchman went so far as to say that if somebody had told him after the race at Zandvoort that he would be in title contention, he would have described them as "an idiot".
Offering his assessment on Verstappen's comeback, Mekies said: "It's back to us not projecting ourselves.
"You see me a bit silent because we never project ourselves, certainly not in the engineering group. Back at the factory, everybody is just focused on getting the best for the next sessions.
"We don't do these calculations. It's as simple as that. Even now, we still don't do it. We're not going to do it. Going to Mexico, we are going to have good discussions about what we can do for Mexico, [looking at] what limited us here.
"Was McLaren really so far away, or are we going to have a wake-up call in Mexico? That's how we are approaching it.
"Of course, if you look at the string of results [from Zandvoort], second, first, first, second, first, then it's outstanding.
"It's a fantastic moment, and everybody should be proud of it, especially the people you don't see, those back in the factory, and we will try to continue with that intensity."
