Nikita Mazepin began karting in 2011, and finished second behind Lando Norris in the 2014 CIK-FIA Karting Championship. In the following year, the Moscow native competed in Formula Renault and Formula Toyota, although failed to establish himself. Two mediocre seasons in the Formula 3 European Championship came next, before the Russian scored four wins for the ART Grand Prix team - the most of any driver - en route to a second-place finish in the 2018 GP3 series.

The jump to Formula 2 in 2019 initially yielded little success, as Mazepin struggled to 18th place in the final standings, while his teammate Nyck de Vries won the championship. That prompted a move from ART Grand Prix to the new Hitech Grand Prix team ahead of the 2020 F2 season. Two victories and six podiums was a marked improvement, as the Russian finished fifth, 51 points behind champion Mick Schumacher.

Mazepin made his F1 debut in 2021 at the Haas team, with fellow rookie and F2 graduate Schumacher as his teammate. It proved to be a difficult year for the American outfit and particularly for Mazepin, who frequently found himself at the back of the field.

With new technical regulations being introduced into the sport for the 2022 campaign, Haas are hoping to make their way back up the midfield, and Mazepin will also be aiming for better as he enters into his second season, again racing alongside Schumacher.
