George Russell will start Saturday's sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix from pole position after beating his team-mate to the top spot.
Russell clocked a 1:31.520 to secure another front row position on the starting grid as he carried on his strong run from the season-opening round in Australia.
The other Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli was second on the road, three-tenths down on Russell.
However, the Italian will take a trip to the stewards after impeding Lando Norris during the session.
The reigning champion was third for McLaren. His team-mate Oscar Piastri was fifth, with Lewis Hamilton lodged in between the two papaya-coloured cars.
Charles Leclerc rounded out the top six for Ferrari, while a strong effort from Pierre Gasly will see the Alpine driver line up in seventh.
Red Bull endured a frustrating session as both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar failed to compete towards the front of the field.
The former was heard venting his frustrations over the team radio after being blocked by Gasly during a lap in SQ2, with the Alpine driver also booked in for a stewards' visit.
Verstappen outqualified his new team-mate in eighth place, while Hadjar had to settle for 10th. Haas' sole entry in SQ3 came via Oliver Bearman, who was ninth.

Audi and Racing Bulls miss out on top 10
Nico Hulkenberg narrowly failed to reach the top 10 as he looks to get his season up and running following a non-start in Australia.
The second Haas of Esteban Ocon followed the Audi driver, while Liam Lawson also failed to escape the drop zone in SQ2.
Following their heroic runs to point-scoring finishes at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, it was a disappointing session for Gabriel Bortoleto and rookie Arvid Lindblad.
The duo could only classify in 14th and 15th, leaving them with work to do on Saturday if they wish to reach the points.
While Gasly secured a spot in the top 10, team-mate Franco Colapinto couldn't quite do the same and had to settle for 16th place.
Williams, Aston Martin struggles continue
Williams' challenging start to the season continued as both of its cars failed to make it past the opening segment of the session.
Carlos Sainz managed to pip his team-mate Alex Albon to 17th, with the Grove-based squad filling out the ninth row of the grid.
The two-by-two formation for the teams continued as Aston Martin took an early exit, as it too continues its attempts to get up to speed following a disrupted pre-season period.
Fernando Alonso was 19th, ahead of Lance Stroll in the second Aston Martin entry.
Newcomer Cadillac will form up on the last row of the grid, with Valtteri Bottas sitting ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez.
Perez failed to participate in the session due to a fuel system issue that appeared during free practice.
