Video: Spectacular crash during Extreme E season opener

Christine Giampaoli Zonca has been taken to hospital for precautionary checks following the terrifying crash in Saudi Arabia.

Veloce Racing's Christine 'GZ' Giampaoli Zonca has been taken to hospital following a dramatic, high-speed crash during qualifying for the Desert X Prix in Saudi Arabia.

The Italian-Canarian driver was at the wheel of the Veloce entry when she appeared to get a long, fast left-hander slightly wrong. The car dug into the sand and flipped over, before cartwheeling over its front to come to rest upside down.

The red flags were immediately shown to neutralise the session.

Giampaoli Zonca was brought to hospital for precautionary check-ups, while Veloce Racing have since released an update confirming she suffered a fractured foot in the crash.

"Veloce Racing driver Christine GZ has left hospital with a confirmed fractured foot following her accident during Qualifying 1 of the Desert X Prix earlier today (19 February)," read a statement from the team.

"Christine is in good spirits, although disappointed that she will be unable to compete for the remainder of the event, but plans to attend the race site tomorrow to support her Veloce Racing colleagues."
