Sergio Perez has provided an insight into the final chat he had with former Red Bull team boss Christian Horner before his exit from the team.
Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 and spent four years alongside Max Verstappen.
The Mexican driver struggled for pace towards the end of his stint with the squad, leading to his departure at the end of the 2024 campaign.
Earlier this year, Perez declared that “no driver can survive” at Red Bull while Verstappen is present inside the squad and steering influence on the car's development.
It's a message that Perez conveyed to Horner when the decision was made to part ways.
“Thank you so much for everything,” Perez said when asked what his final message to Horner was, as quoted by motorsport.com.
“And I'm very sorry for anyone who comes here, because it will cost them a lot.”
Horner himself would only last a handful of months within the team as he found himself ousted as team principal midway through the 2025 campaign.
Perez was forced onto the sidelines for the current season but has already secured a drive for 2026 with the new Cadillac team.
Despite his shaky end to his term with Red Bull, Perez declared the decision to cut him loose was a positive one.
"What happened with Red Bull, in the end, I knew it was the best thing that could have happened to me,” he said.
“Because being at Red Bull and the conditions I found myself in were very demanding.
“And all the drivers who have arrived and those who will arrive will continue to have the same problems because it's a very complex car to drive, where you have to constantly adapt to Verstappen's style."
