Perez eyes potential to be 'very close' to Verstappen

Sergio Perez has largely been unable to compete with the pace on display by team-mate Max Verstappen during their time together at Red Bull.

Sergio Perez has outlined that he is “focusing on myself” as he attempts to reel in the gap to Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen.

Perez joined Verstappen at Red Bull in 2021 but has largely been unable to match the pace set by the three-time world champion.

Verstappen has consistently been the stronger performer of the pair, with Perez’s lacklustre showings during 2023 leading to questions being asked about his future at the team.

However, he has enjoyed a stronger start to the 2024 season, scoring a duo of second places in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia respectively.

When asked how he is preparing to match up against the Dutchman going forward, Perez told media including RacingNews365: “Just maximizing myself in all the areas.

“I think Max is a very complete driver that is very strong in qualifying, very strong in the race. Very rarely has weaknesses or makes mistakes.”

Perez looking to further gains

Verstappen's streak of success was disrupted last time out in Australia when a right rear brake issue forced him to retire from the event.

The non-finish denied Verstappen the chance to equal his record of 10 consecutive wins which he set during his dominant title-winning campaign last year.

“He’s driving at a very high level,” Perez added.

“I think when you look back, even in qualifying, the last two qualifying, he's been the only driver that has been able to maximise his full potential come qualifying.

“So I think just focusing on myself, obviously keeping an eye on what he's doing, how he's getting the maximum out of the car.

“At the same time, I think it's just important to focus on myself and get the maximum out of myself. And if I'm able to do that, I know that I'm always going to be very close.”
