Lewis Hamilton reveals Charles Leclerc talks after Monza tension

Lewis Hamilton has revealed how he and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc "squashed" any lingering bad blood between the two after talks over their Italian GP tension. 

At Turns 1 and 2 at Monza, Hamilton attempted to move up the inside of Leclerc, who then pushed the sister car into the gravel and down the order. 

Post-race, Hamilton said there were "no rules here" regarding the so-called rules of engagement that he had against Nico Rosberg at Mercedes and that there was "no we" involved in the incident, as he felt he was ahead at the Turn 2 apex, and so had the right to position.

The seven-time champion has indicated his desire to be given preferential treatment at the team in the title race fight, as he was 59 points behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli prior to Monza, although this has now slipped to 76 - over three grands prix worth - following the Monza race.

Detailing talks which had taken place throughout the turnaround from Monza to Madrid, Hamilton revealed that he and Leclerc had sat face-to-face to clear the air, and that any lingering discontent had been "squashed."

"It's been really positive. I spoke to Fred on Monday, and we just had a clearing out discussion. Naturally, we can always have different opinions, but at the end of the day, we come together, and we find a way forward. 

"That's the positives of where we've got to over the past 15 months or whatever it is. We've got to a place where we have really great communication internally, and the same with me and Charles. 

I think if you just look at this, the history of this sport,  this happened before, so it's no biggie. 

When then asked about wanting rules of engagement and if it was discussed, Hamilton was firm that "it was not" and added that "I'm sure at some stage we'll discuss how we can be better, but we've not had a lot of time to turn around. You can't change things in two days.

"It is not something we can change into this weekend. There's a huge amount of moving parts. There are a lot of people. There's a culture that's been here for a long, long time, and moving big pieces is not so easy. And so we just take it one step at a time, and it starts with discussing it. 

"It starts with the acknowledgement, which we have internally, and so then it just comes to working out the solutions together and how we can, and it just doesn't happen overnight.

"We'll probably try things, and it still won't be good, but we'll eventually get to that to the point we need.

"I think what's great is that there was no shying away from having a discussion. We sat face to face, just him and me, and talked about it, and we were just both open and honest, and we squashed it, and we can move on. 

"I think that shows maturity from him, and I think it's healthiest. It's a relationship we have built over time. Of course, there's going to be frustrations, and there's going to be times where we're here. There will, I'm sure, be more times we are close because we're very close in pace. 

"We both want to win just as much as each other, and we both want to do well for the team as well."
