Fernando Alonso has confirmed that a switch to the World Endurance Championship next year is an option on the table as he weighs up a decision over his future.
Alonso has not yet declared what his intentions for 2027 are, as he has yet to formally commit himself to an F1 extension.
Aston Martin has endured a challenging campaign thus far, with Alonso scoring just three points after 13 rounds.
However, the Silverstone-based squad has voiced its desire to continue with Alonso next season as it targets a jump in the pecking order with its engine partner Honda.
Outside of F1, Aston Martin is set up in the World Endurance Championship - a competition Alonso is well familiar with, having won the 2018-19 title with Toyota, as well as two Le Mans victories.
When asked if a move to WEC is an option for 2027, Alonso told media including RacingNews365: “Yes.”
Alonso has insisted on multiple occasions that his future in F1 will not be measured by the competitiveness of the car, but rather how much he enjoys driving the new regulations.
RacingNews365 understands that no announcement regarding Alonso's future is expected this weekend in Madrid, despite it being a home round for the two-time champion.
Alonso backed this up ahead of the Madrid weekend, insisting any declaration on his future would be “not soon”.
As he focuses on the on-track action, Alonso is expecting a challenging event as the drivers get up to speed around a new street track, which has been tipped by some to cause disruption.
“The track seems difficult, first of all, to learn,” he said.
“Very technical, a lot of kerb-riding, and a couple of high-speed sections where you need to get very close to the walls, which is very attractive and very high adrenaline for a driver.
“Close to Jeddah, some sections. But one thing is the simulator, and then reality always gives you a different feeling.
“So I'm looking forward to FP1 and learning the track from the car and and discover all these details.”
