George Russell topped the single free practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix, with a 1:32.741, beating Kimi Antonelli by +0.120.
The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton went fifth and sixth-quickest at the Shanghai International Circuit, as the advantage of the two teams over McLaren and Red Bull rolled over from Melbourne.
However, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ending third and fourth, the MCL40 appeared more competitive. But neither could get within half a second of Russell, and both strapped the soft compound Pirellis onto their cars later than Ferrari.
Through two virtual safety car disruptions early in the hour, Red Bull looked a shade off, with Max Verstappen only able to get up to eighth on the timing board.
Oliver Bearman had a strong showing, going seventh for Haas. Arvid Lindblad's session came to a halt after only a quarter of an hour, and Carlos Sainz's did not get going until past the halfway mark.

Opening salvo
As the one and only free practice session of the weekend got underway, Franco Colapinto struggled to get space in the pit lane, with Kimi Antonelli unwilling to let him into the queue.
Once he got out on track, the Argentine driver spun his Alpine at Turn 9, in a slow-speed equivalent to what happened to Verstappen last week in Melbourne.
Hamilton and Norris almost made contact at the final corner whilst building up for a push lap, with just the single hour of running putting track time and position at a premium.
Once the seven-time F1 drivers' champion opened his lap, he suffered a bizarre spin into Turn 6, flatspotting the medium tyres on his SF-26, telling his team he "locked the brakes" over radio.
Following that, race control confirmed that the minor contact between the Norris and the Ferrari driver had been noted; however, it was later not investigated by the stewards.
The virtual safety car came out with just under 10 minutes gone, after debris was spotted on the long back straight.
Mercedes carried on where it left off at Albert Park. Antonelli was initially fastest with a 1:35 flat, before Russell pipped him by just 29 milliseconds, both on the yellow-walled compound.
In short order, the Briton further brought down the hammer, reaching a 1:34.169. His team-mate responded with two purple sectors, but a yellow flag in the final sector left him over sixth-tenths of a second slower.
The reason for the interruption, which was soon upgraded to a second VSC, was Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls machine coming to a stop on the inside of Turn 14, ending his practice running for the weekend after just 15 minutes.
Once the field returned to full speed, Leclerc got between the Mercedes cars, just under two-and-a-half tenths slower than Russell.

Second half
Carlos Sainz saw his session heavily disrupted with a suspected data issue, with no representative time at the halfway stage.
Oliver Bearman was having an impressive session for Haas in fourth, but was soon shuffled slightly down the order by Hamilton, on soft Pirellis, and Oscar Piastri, who went third fastest for McLaren.
The 41-year-old soon went quicker than his team-mate, making use of his pacier rubber after compromising his first set, with all the other top times set on mediums.
With just under 15 minutes to go, Colapinto came to a stop in the pit lane, just in front of McLaren. As the Alpine mechanics ran all the way down to collect him, he managed to get his A526 going again. It was later confirmed to be an electronic control unit reset.
Soon after, with a set of red-walled Pirellis strapped to his W17, Russell shaved 1.3 seconds off his best time, getting down to 1:32.807.
Leclerc, Hamilton and Antonelli all responded, but only his team-mate could get close, with a time one-and-a-half tenths slower.
Whilst the Italian was able to bring his time down slightly more, the Ferraris did not improve. This opened the door for the McLarens, with Norris and Piastri ending the session third and fourth fastest after later runs on the softs.
