Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris and his McLaren team have both been nominated for prestigious sporting awards by Laureus.

Norris, who became the 35th F1 world champion in 2025, has been nominated for the 'World Breakthrough Star of the Year' award after defeating four-time champion Max Verstappen in a thrilling final race decider in Abu Dhabi by just two points.

Norris will be up against football's Desire Doue, Tennis's Joao Fonseca, Canadian basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, darts world champion Luke Littler, and swimming's Zidi Yu.

His McLaren team, which won a second successive constructors' world championship in 2025, has been nominated for 'World Team of the Year.'

The Woking-based squad will be fighting against the England Women's football team, which won the European Championships, the European Ryder Cup squad, which defeated the United States at Bethpage, the Indian Women's World Cup winning cricketers, basketball's Oklahoma City Thunder, and Paris Saint-Germain, who won the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

No F1 driver has been nominated for the overall 'World Sportsman' of the Year' award, although MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez is nominated. Marquez bounced back from years of injury trouble to dominate the 2025 season to win his seventh premier class title.

He will be up against Tennis duo Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Ballon D'Or winning footballer Ousmane Dembele, pole-vault legend Mondo Duplantis, and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, who won the race for the fourth time.

Previous F1 winners of the award include Michael Schumacher (2002, 2004), Sebastian Vettel (2014), Lewis Hamilton (2020), and Max Verstappen (2022).

The winners will be announced in a special ceremony in Madrid on April 20th.
