Kimi Antonelli has conceded for the first time to feeling "tense" as F1 drivers' title history beckons for the 20-year-old.
Mercedes driver Antonelli will start the Mexico City Grand Prix from fourth on the grid at the Autodrómo Hermanos Rodríguez, up one position after finishing fifth quickest due to four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen serving a one-place penalty after his on-track altercation with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson during second practice.
Although the scenario for Antonelli appears to be a straightforward one going into the race, needing to finish ninth or higher, even if Mercedes' team-mate George Russell - who starts second - wins the race, the magnitude of what he could achieve now sits heavy upon him.
Asked as to how he would sleep tonight knowing the magnitude of what awaits him, the young Italian replied: "It hasn't been the easiest weekend, to be fair, and definitely still not feeling 100 per cent.
"But, as well, the thought of what could happen is there, and I'm definitely a bit more tense than usual. I definitely don't feel as relaxed, but I will try to get a good sleep and then focus on tomorrow."
Antonelli conceded that qualifying was not his best, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton on pole - the seven-time F1 champion's first for over three years - followed by Russell and then the second SF-26 of Charles Leclerc.
"I struggled to get a good feeling with the tyres in Q3, and I just didn't have the most confidence," said Antonelli.
"I was a bit tense, not gonna lie, and yeah, it was a poor lap. You know, many mistakes here and there.
"But overall, still P4 and a lot to play for."
