Jos Verstappen, the father of four-time champion Max, has provided his first reaction to the shock news that Gianpiero Lambiase will leave Red Bull.
Lambiase has served as Verstappen's race engineer since the Dutchman joined the Milton Keynes-based squad shortly after the start of the 2016 season.
The duo have enjoyed a strong partnership together, forming one of the most successful alliances in the sport's history.
However, earlier this week, Red Bull announced his exit in 2028, before confirmation came that he will join McLaren as chief racing officer.
Verstappen senior revealed that the news did not come out of the blue to those close to Lamabiase.
"We knew for a while and we also knew when it was going to happen," Jos told RaceXpress.
"We have another year and a half to two years to work with him. It's a huge opportunity for him, so we understand.
“We also told him to do it and grab it with both hands. Beyond that, it's up to Red Bull to replace him. We will see."
Lambiase's exit has sparked suggestions that it could lead to Verstappen's exit from the team, having once declared that he would only remain at Red Bull as long as Lambiase was there.
Jos, however, is less convinced that Verstappen will follow through with his comments.
"I think things have changed,” he said.
“Certainly after four championships you have achieved a lot together, but that is up to Max. However, I think he will just continue."
