The FIA presidential election is due to take place next month - however, it seems the outcome is a forgone conclusion.

The FIA has confirmed that Mohammed Ben Sulayem is the only eligible candidate to contest the upcoming presidential election.

Incumbent Ben Sulayem took charge of the position in late 2021, succeeding Jean Todt, who carried out the maximum three terms permitted.

Various figures confirmed their interest earlier this year in opposing Ben Sulayem in the election, but ran into difficulties due to a requirement outlined by the FIA.

The presidential list needs to name 10 other figures, including seven vice presidents for sport scattered across various regions of the world.

This includes one figure from South America, but when the FIA published its list of eligible World Motor Sport Council candidates, only one name from the region was provided.

It was Fabiana Ecclestone, wife of former F1 CEO Bernie, who is part of Ben Sulayem's team. As a result, all other potential candidates could not put forward a complete list.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem's presidential list

Name Position
Mohammed Ben Sulayem (UAE) president of the FIA
Carmelo Sanz De Barros (Spain) president of the senate
Timothy Shearman (Canada) deputy president for automobile mobility and tourism
Malcolm Wilson (UK) deputy president for sport
Abdulla al-Khalifa (Bahrain) vice-president for sport (Middle East and North Africa)
Rodrigo Rocha (Mozambique) vice-president for sport (Africa)
Daniel Coen (Costa Rica) vice-president for sport (North America)
Fabiana Ecclestone (Brazil) vice-president for sport (South America)
Lung-Nien Lee (Singapore) vice-president for sport (Asia-Pacific)
Manuel Aviñó (Spain) vice-president for sport (Europe)
Anna Nordkvist (Sweden) vice-president for sport (Europe)

Tim Mayer, Laura Villars, and Virginie Philipott were among the names who put themselves forward as challengers to Ben Sulayem earlier this year, but could not assemble the necessary list before the deadline.

Villars sought further action over the process and won a hearing in Paris earlier this week to have her complaints heard.

The 28-year-old feels the rules surrounding the election process that has left Ben Sulayem to run unopposed breach the governing body's own statutes.

A judge will rule on the matter on December 3, nine days before the FIA election is due to take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
