Charles Leclerc 'lightbulb moment' detected after 'beautiful' British GP display

Martin Brundle has identified when Charles Leclerc was able to turn around his British Grand Prix — and potentially his entire F1 season.

Martin Brundle believes something clicked for Charles Leclerc between the sprint and qualifying at Silverstone, after a difficult period for the Monegasque driver.

Leclerc claimed his first grand prix victory since Austin 2024 on Sunday, leading from the front in a race that ended under the safety car.

It was a result that also marked Ferrari's 250th Formula 1 World Championship victory, at the very circuit where José Froilán González delivered the Scuderia's first win back in 1951.

Writing in his post-race column for Sky Sports F1, Brundle noted that "Leclerc had some kind of lightbulb moment after the Sprint in terms of car set-up and particularly driving style for these quirky 2026 cars."

The transformation was immediate; Leclerc qualified on the front row, "beaten only by the irrepressible Antonelli."

A strong launch from both SF-26 cars reshuffled the order at the start. Leclerc swept into the lead while Hamilton, who had started third, moved up to second. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, as Brundle put it, "sensibly slotted into third; he had a championship lead to protect."

From there, Leclerc was imperious. Brundle described him as "driving beautifully out front," with Hamilton less comfortable on full fuel and longer runs. Antonelli hunted down and passed the seven-time F1 drivers' champion but could only marginally chip away at Leclerc's advantage.

The pivotal moment came through the pit window. Ferrari brought Hamilton in on lap 23 and Leclerc on lap 25, but Mercedes kept Antonelli out for a full 10 laps longer, handing the 19-year-old a significant tyre advantage.

"Antonelli was catching Leclerc hand over fist, and it seemed inevitable he would win the race," Brundle wrote, "until he radioed in and then slowed on lap 41 with steering issues."

A front-left wheel shield failure robbed Antonelli of what looked a certain victory, leaving him to nurse a crippled W17 to a lowly P16.

For Leclerc, the relief was palpable. He enters the summer stretch 39 points behind Hamilton in the intra-team battle and fourth in the standings on 108 points, having spent much of 2026 in his team-mate's shadow.

Hamilton's Barcelona victory, consistent podium finishes and superior points haul have underlined just how tough a season it has been for the 28-year-old.

Yet Brundle saw cause for genuine optimism, describing the winner as "a rejuvenated and relieved Leclerc."
