Madring reveals staggering difference between Mercedes, Ferrari and the rest

The first two free practice sessions at Madring immediately made it clear that only two teams, Mercedes and Ferrari, were able to find the optimal balance in their cars right from the first free practice session. 

In the second session, both teams confirmed this trend and were able to further refine their performance between the two practice outings.

This is an important observation, as it shows that the W17 and SF-26 appear to be the only 2026 F1 cars that are truly well-rounded. 

They are therefore capable of being competitive on various types of circuits and thus demonstrate less track-specificity than their rivals.

Although both cars base their performance on different strengths, the W17 still holds an advantage in terms of powertrain performance. 

Ferrari, on the other hand, demonstrates excellent vehicle dynamics, thanks to the car’s responsiveness during rapid direction changes in the second sector of the track.

Mercedes, Ferrari carry out minimal changes

Like all other teams, Mercedes and Ferrari had to base their setup exclusively on predictive data, as no actual data was available beforehand. 

As a result, it quickly became obvious that the dynamic responses of both cars to the chosen setups formed the foundation upon which the engineers could build during the two sessions to gradually improve performance further.

This became even clearer when we look at the differences between the teams in the second session, which had narrowed to just one-tenth of a second. 

As grip on the track increased, both teams were able to further optimise their setups without completely overhauling them. 

Compared to the morning, only minimal changes to the setup were necessary.

Tyre performance now the deciding factor

As mentioned, the strengths on which both cars base their performance differ. 

On this track, however, there is no clear dominance of either concept in the various sectors. 

The technical section of the circuit is just as important as the high-speed section. A setup focused entirely on one of these two aspects would therefore be a mistake.

It’s all about finding a compromise between downforce and efficiency. The battle now hinges primarily on tyre performance. 

Tread wear appeared quite evident on all cars. However, despite the harsh conditions - particularly the very high track temperatures - Mercedes and Ferrari were able to maintain a fairly consistent pace during the long runs.

In short, so far it appears that there won’t be a third team in Spain capable of joining the battle between Mercedes and Ferrari.
