Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated the device that allows Red Bull to raise its front bib is “outrageous”.

The trick came to light during the United States Grand Prix weekend with Red Bull admitting to having the device after scrutiny from rival teams.

The FIA has admitted it is unable to verify if the device was used between qualifying and the race at previous events - however McLaren CEO Zak Brown has requested the team sign affidavits over the matter.

TV cameras captured Red Bull demonstrating to the FIA how the system works, which greatly amused Wolff.

“My view is from the distance of what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard, it’s outrageous,” Wolff told media including RacingNews365.

“I really liked that when they put this real broom in the car to demonstrate how that is the only way of that getting changed.

“I wonder how long it took them to make this and to stick it in there. I didn’t know that in F1, we were using such devices.”

However, like Brown, Wolff insists the sport can't rely on Red Bull's promise to use the system again going forward.

“It’s not good enough to say ‘that’s it, promise we’re not going to do it again’,” he stated.

“Why would you design something and put two marks on it for two positions? Is that the precise decision making in Formula 1?”
