Pascal Wehrlein avoided thinking about the past in his initial celebrations after becoming Formula E world champion in a tense London season finale.

Wehrlein entered the final race of the season with a slim three-point lead in the drivers' championship and looked set to lose the title to Mitch Evans.

However, a late error for Evans handed Wehrlein the crown, with second place in the ExCeL Centre having been enough for the German behind winner Oliver Rowland.

Things have not come easily for Wehrlein over recent years, following his F1 exit and an accident in the Race of Champions which left him with three broken vertebrae. However, he is not looking at his past in his title celebrations.

"I'm not thinking too much about the past," Wehrlein told select media including RacingNews365. "I know I can drive cars quite good,'" he joked.

"But sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes life seems more fair, sometimes a bit less. I think we are all in a very fortunate situation.

"Nevertheless, what happened in the past or not, to me the best thing in life is my daughter and my family. That is above everything else. Yeah, this year has been awesome, definitely a special year.

"Already when my whole family was in Misano when I took my first win in front of them, that felt super special. And they are here again this weekend."

Wehrlein relishes 'cool season'

Wehrlein was involved in a tough fight with Evans throughout the season finale, which saw the pair make contact.

The German has had several close fights with Evans and fellow title rival Nick Cassidy this season, although he has relished the scraps.

"I think we had some tough fights," added Wehrlein. "Sometimes more fierce, sometimes less. That's how it goes.

"But I think overall, it has been a very cool season. A lot of drivers in contention, a lot of different winners. But again, this year was more than last season, for example, I think last season it was quick.

"And the cool thing is three drivers pretty close in the last race, and we knew whoever would finish in front would win the championship.

"So I think, fans cannot wish for more. Hopefully the race today was also nice to watch."
