First Extreme E qualifying halted by dramatic crash

Extreme E kicked off on Saturday morning with its first-ever qualifying session. As Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton's teams battled to top the timesheet, a crash for Claudia Hurtgen brought a temporary halt to the session.

New electric series Extreme E got underway with qualifying one on Saturday morning, but it was to be a crash by Claudia Hurtgen of the ABT Cupra XE team that temporarily brought out the red flags during an eventful session.

Previous to this, we also saw the RosbergXRacing team, ran by Nico Rosberg, and X44, owned by Lewis Hamilton, vying for pole position in scenes reminiscent of the 2016 F1 season.

Hurtgen was thankfully able to emerge from the car unharmed, but the incident itself was a dramatic one, as the chassis rolled several times before coming to a complete halt.

The Extreme X series will see the likes of Sebastien Loeb and Jenson Button drive in five diverse regions of the world, with the sustainable championship partly being created to help raise awareness of climate issues.

The video showing Hurtgen's high-speed crash can be found below.
