Max Verstappen has officially obtained his category A licence for the Nordschleife, opening the door to future participation in events including the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
The 27-year-old completed the necessary requirements this weekend at the German circuit, passing an initial driving test and theory exam on Friday to receive his category B licence, before competing in a race on Saturday to satisfy the requirements for the higher permit.
This was achieved despite initial confusion caused by technical problems with a sister car, which is understood to have been damaged in qualifying.
Verstappen completed 14 laps in the #980 Porsche Cayman GT4, sufficient for the panel to award him the coveted licence on an exceptional basis.
Officially, the Dutchman did not have two results registered due to the mechanical issues with the sister vehicle, but his lap count proved adequate for certification.
The Nordschleife does not permit drivers to compete in GT3 machinery without proper credentials, regardless of their achievements elsewhere, including four-time F1 drivers’ champions.
The Red Bull driver could return to the Nordschleife as early as 27 September, this time behind the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3 for Verstappen.com Racing.

Endurance racing ambitions
Verstappen has never hidden his passion for endurance racing. Beyond the 24 Hours of Nürburgring 24, he harbours ambitions to compete at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans.
For now, Formula 1 remains his primary focus, though Verstappen recently suggested a potential detour might be possible if he is not fighting for the championship.
With his category A licence now secured, Verstappen possesses all the necessary documentation to pursue his long-term racing aspirations outside of Formula 1.
