Toto Wolff has branded Mercedes' British Grand Prix result as "bittersweet" following late drama at Silverstone.
Whilst fighting over third position, George Russell was forced to pit due to a slow puncture, before team-mate Kimi Antonelli's hopes of a win were ended with a front-left wheel shield failure destroying the handling of his W17.
Antonelli pitted twice and then also received a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits, dropping him out of the points altogether as Russell ultimately recovered to take second place.
The end result means Russell has reduced Antonelli's points lead down to 25 - a single grand prix win worth of points - as Wolff recalled the change in fortunes for the Brackley squad.
"As for the race, it was bittersweet," Wolff reflected to media, including RacingNews365.
"There is the sweet part that George, after so many days of struggle and not gelling with the car, was able to secure P2, and on the other side, Kimi had the victory to play for.
"He made huge steps towards Charles at the end, and personally, I didn't believe that it was possible, but my intuition was wrong, and the strategy with the data was right.
"It said we were going to catch him with six laps until the end with a huge tyre offset, and that was on the menu, but then we had the problem with the wheel shield that broke."
