Toto Wolff has dismissed suggestions that George Russell was disadvantaged by Mercedes' decision to pit Kimi Antonelli under the virtual safety car at the Italian Grand Prix, calling the criticism from "couch warriors" as "complete bullshit".
Antonelli won at Monza from Russell, the pair finishing 3.8s apart to complete a Mercedes one-two at the championship leader's home race. It extended Antonelli's lead in the drivers' standings to 66 points over his team-mate, with Mercedes now 122 clear of Ferrari in the constructors' championship.
The flashpoint was the mid-race virtual safety car period, which allows a car to be pitted at a reduced time loss because track speeds fall while the pit lane limit stays the same. Mercedes brought in Antonelli, who had started on the hard tyre and switched to the medium.
Russell, already running hards, was in the lead from Antonelli and stayed out. Pirelli had gone into the weekend expecting a one-stop to be the likely route at Monza, with rear tyre temperatures the main thing to manage rather than outright degradation.
Asked whether Russell should have had priority in the call, the Mercedes team principal was blunt.
Discussing questions raised as to whether Russell should have had priority in the decision-making in Monza, Wolff replied to Sky F1: "No, it's absolutely the right thing we did.
"He was on the hards; it was predicted to be a one-stop as the better strategy. The medium was a compromise. We had to put the medium on Kimi because he started on the hards.
"There is just no way, and obviously there are some couch warriors that will drop their comments after having watched some other material online, saying that he [Russell] was penalised.
"It's complete bullshit. Sorry, I should say that it's complete crap."
Wolff wary of Spanish GP qualifying 'yo-yo' threat
Wolff was speaking after final practice in Madrid, where Antonelli again set the pace. The 20-year-old lapped the Circuito de Madring in 1m 32.797 to head Charles Leclerc by 0.166s, with Russell only sixth, 0.702s adrift.
Looking ahead to qualifying, Wolff said: "I think if we put it all together, we fight for pole and we fight for the first row.
"But it could be a little bit of yo-yoing. It could be all within a tenth. So you could be on the good side of it or on the wrong side."
