Formula 1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali has released a statement following the "deeply saddening" loss of motorsport legend Alex Zanardi.

Zanardi's family confirmed via a social media post that the 59-year-old passed away on Friday, May 1, marking the loss of one of motorsport's greatest inspirations.

As well as being a former racing driver, Zanardi became a four-time Paralympic gold medallist in handbike competition.

The Italian was the definition of no hurdle being too great to overcome, having returned to motorsport despite losing both of his legs in a horrifying crash in 2001.

For Domenicali, F1, and all of motorsport, it is a significant loss of an incredible human being.

Domenicali's statement read: "I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Alex Zanardi.

"He was truly an inspirational person, as a human and as an athlete. I will always carry with me his extraordinary strength.

"He faced challenges that would have stopped anyone, yet he continued to look forward, always with a smile and a stubborn determination that inspired us all.

"While his loss is profoundly felt, his legacy remains strong.

"At this time, my heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Daniela, his son Niccolò, the rest of the family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him."
