Max Verstappen stormed to pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix in a closely fought, high-octane grid-setting session under the lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, posting a 1:31.373.
It was Verstappen's 50th pole in F1, and it puts him on track to finally conquer the last circuit — other than the new Madring — he has yet to triumph at. He has only ever led three grand prix laps in Singapore.
Charles Leclerc qualified second, half a tenth slower but 69 milliseconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton at F1's original night race, whilst Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris rounded out the top five.
Isack Hadjar was the big-name scalp from Q1, when a gearbox failure ended what had already been a messy segment for the Red Bull driver.
He will be joined at the tail of the field by George Russell, who has taken a grid penalty for a power unit change, and Fernando Alonso, who has claimed he will also take a grid drop, having been knocked out of Q1 too.
The Mercedes driver was sixth fastest in the Southeast Asian city-state, with Oscar Piastri seventh.
Pierre Gasly beat the Racing Bulls pair of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad in the best of the rest battle.

Q3
When the final part of qualifying got underway, Verstappen roared to a 1:31.373, setting the time to beat from Hamilton by a little over a tenth of a second.
The upgraded Mercedes was finally starting to show its teeth, with Antonelli a provisional third after the first runs, from Leclerc, Norris, Russell and Piastri. Pierre Gasly split Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad in ninth.
In the end, Verstappen's first effort was enough for pole, as others struggled to make notable gains on their final runs.
Q2
Despite knowing he will start the Singapore Grand Prix from the rear of the field, Russell and Mercedes took the opportunity to learn more from their A/B test, with the Briton on the old package and Antonelli running the upgraded specification for comparison.
Russell set the benchmark time, but his team-mate soon pipped him. Hamilton brought the target time down significantly, going four tenths quicker than the young Italian, whilst Verstappen moved in to split the Silver Arrows.
The Dutchman was not, however, best pleased with the performance of his gearbox, complaining of the downshifts — after a gearbox issue had seen Hadjar eliminated from Q1.
Norris eventually closed the gap to Hamilton, going second as the seven remaining front runners held a relatively comfortable buffer to the midfield.
Verstappen reinforced the underlying pace of the Red Bull, going just a tenth slower than Hamilton, who had managed to improve even more.
Gasly joined the Racing Bulls duo of Lawson and Lindblad in fighting their way through to Q3 and the top 10 shootout. Franco Colapinto in the second Alpine was less fortunate, having clattered the wall on his final push lap.
In a relatively incident-free session for the stewards, Nico Hulkenberg could find himself penalised for impeding Carlos Sainz at Turn 5.
OUT in Q2: P11 - Nico Hulkenberg; P12 - Oliver Bearman; P13 - Esteban Ocon; P14 - Carlos Sainz; P15 - Gabriel Bortoleto; P16 - Franco Colapinto
Q1
After the mayhem of the Sprint, Esteban Ocon considered an encore, almost finding the wall at Turn 13 in the opening moments of the session.
Thankfully for the outgoing Haas driver, he narrowly avoided the barriers, enabling him to reverse and get his car pointing in the right direction.
Lance Stroll and Hadjar also had moments early on, with the Red Bull driver heading straight on at Turn 8 and into the run-off area.
After returning to the track, disaster almost struck when his engine turned off, leaving him temporarily stranded before a system reboot seemingly solved his woes. However, he would later lose some gears, leaving him unable to register a lap time and consigned to the back of the grid.
Up front, the McLarens had put their collision in the Sprint behind them to set the early Q1 pace, with Norris marginally quicker than Piastri.
Hamilton would ultimately best both, as Antonelli split the papaya pair, only to have his time deleted for track limits. He and Russell got through in P12 and P13, respectively.
Leclerc got within a tenth of his Ferrari team-mate to make it a Scuderia one-two, with Lawson impressing in the opening segment by going fourth-quickest.
OUT in Q1: P17 - Fernando Alonso; P18 - Alex Albon; P19 - Lance Stroll; P20 - Sergio Perez; P21 - Valtteri Bottas; P22 - Isack Hadjar
