Carlos Sainz became the fifth casualty of a chaotic São Paulo Grand Prix, suffering a second crash on a day to forget for the Ferrari driver.
Just a week ago, Sainz was celebrating taking the chequered flag in the Mexico City Grand Prix, a win to savour for the Spaniard in his final season with Ferrari before being ousted for Lewis Hamilton.
Seven days on and Sainz was involved in two crashes at a rain-lashed Interlagos, initially in qualifying that resulted in a pit-lane start following a change of multiple power unit components.
Just after the midway point of the race, and approaching the twisty part of the circuit into Turn 7, Sainz put his left wheel on the white line.
Under braking, it sent Sainz into a spin and slide into a Tecpro barrier. Initially, it appeared as if Sainz would be unable to get going again, but after a short period, he managed to extract himself, only to stop again on the run-off area.
It resulted in a safety car period, after which Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who had started from 17th on the grid, claimed the lead from Alpine's Esteban Ocon.
