Pierre Gasly has described his race-ending crash at the Miami Grand Prix as “very scary” after his Alpine was flipped upside down.
Early in the race, Gasly was battling Liam Lawson for the final point-paying position.
As Lawson attempted an overtake, he locked up and made contact with Gasly, who had left space on the inside of the corner.
Gasly’s Alpine flipped over before coming to rest, with part of the car perched on the barrier.
Reflecting on the incident, Gasly told media including RacingNews365: “I'm luckily fine. [It was] very scary, because I was in the air without any control.
“I [hit] the wall rear-end first. I didn't even know where I was going to land. So it wasn't pleasant.
“I knew he was there, I knew we were side by side. Unfortunately, we'd probably just have to accept losing the position.
“But I knew he would still try, so that's why I left the space, a car and a half on the inside.
“Just for him, at least, to have the choice to stay there if he really wanted.
“I haven't seen the footage but clearly it was too optimistic coming in.”
Lawson avoided a penalty as it was later found that a gearbox failure resulted in his dramatic lock-up.
