F2 unveils new car for 2027 season and beyond

The new F2 car, which will be used from 2027 to 2029, has been unveiled ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The previous generation has been in use for the past three years, with the current cycle coming to an end upon the conclusion of the campaign, which is currently being led by Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov.

As the senior-most support category for F1, Formula 2 machinery is vitally important to the continued development of young drivers as they ascend the feeder ladder to the pinnacle of motorsport, or other leading championships, such as Formula E, WEC and IndyCar.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: "Formula 2 is where the next generation of top drivers are made. The new 2027 car raises the bar on safety, delivers closer racing, improves accessibility, and reinforces our commitment to sustainability.
 
"Developed with Formula 2 and our technical partners, this car is designed to push young drivers and prepare them for the highest level of competition, while providing fans with even better racing. It is a key step in strengthening the FIA's single-seater pathway and developing the champions of tomorrow."

The series describes the new model as a significant evolution of the current generation, and while the 2027 car retains the existing Dallara chassis in a move designed to control costs, several aerodynamic changes have been introduced.

Redesigned front and rear wings are intended to improve the car's ability to follow more closely, potentially allowing for closer and more competitive racing.

The revised appearance also brings the F2 car more in line with Formula 1's latest design philosophy, further strengthening the championship's position as the final step on the single-seater ladder before F1.

"Formula 2 is the ultimate proving ground for the next generation of Formula 1 drivers, where the very best young talent competes wheel-to-wheel and develops the skills needed to reach the pinnacle of motorsport," Stefano Domenicali, F1 president and CEO, added.

"This new car is another important step forward, combining innovation, safety and closer racing while maintaining the level playing field that allows drivers to showcase their ability.

Into the details

The new car will continue to use Mecachrome's 3.4-litre turbocharged engine, while sustainable fuel supplied by Aramco will remain part of the package after being introduced to the championship in 2025.

Pirelli will also continue as F2's exclusive tyre supplier, providing tyres developed specifically for the series.

One of the most notable technical additions for the new generation is an on-board starter. The feature has required Hewland to develop an evolution of the current gearbox to accommodate the integrated starter system.

Elsewhere, the car retains the FIA's 2024 specifications covering braking performance, steering effort and cockpit ergonomics, maintaining accessibility for a wide range of drivers.

The existing Marelli electronic and hydraulic systems will also carry over, including the EM Motorsport Marshalling system.

With the current car having established itself as an important platform for drivers preparing for Formula 1, the 2027 challenger represents an evolution rather than a wholesale redesign as FIA Formula 2 looks to continue refining the final stage of the pathway to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Bruno Michel, FIA Formula 2 Championship CEO, said: "When working on this new car, our first goal was to ensure it remains the perfect tool to prepare drivers for F1.

"Together with the FIA, we have opted for the current chassis and focused on redesigning the front and the rear wings. This enables us to keep the costs managed, while bringing the design closer to the look of an F1 car while enhancing the F2 car’s ability to deliver close racing.

"We have added an on-board starter that will simplify the operational side for the teams and will allow the drivers to restart their car after spinning or stalling on track, and we’ve been continuing our work with our partners Aramco and Pirelli on driver preparation, sustainability, and providing the fans with a great show.
