Norris bullish over McLaren future after critical change

McLaren's dramatic mid-season upturn in fortunes has prompted Lando Norris to issue a bold statement of intent.

Lando Norris believes McLaren is in a "better place" than at any point since he joined the team in 2019. The Woking-based side struggled badly at the start of the current campaign with Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri struggling to finish in the lower points positions during the first eight races of the season. But a raft of mid-season updates transformed the MCL60's competitiveness, allowing Norris to take back-to-back second-place finishes in Britain and Hungary. Having risen to eighth in the Drivers' championship, Norris told The Athletic : "I'm confident we're in a better place than I would say we ever have been with our structure, team dynamic, motivation, and chances for the future.

McLaren improvements mirroring Red Bull

McLaren's sluggish start to the year prompted a backroom reshuffle, with Technical Director James Key ousted and a number of new hires announced for next season, including David Sanchez from Ferrari. On the changes, Norris explained: "The rate of development improved quite a bit when things changed around. "Everyone felt a bit more open and free and creative and came up with cooler ideas. Definitely [we] did take an increase of performance from that side. "There's more constant, small improvements coming from everywhere, which is what Red Bull are so good at now. "It's not that they just have one thing that’s particularly good. Every single thing is there for a reason and there to help improve the car. That's kind of what we've got to. "We've started to really improve little things, and some of that came together, which delivered in one big thing [the podium finishes in Britain and Hungary]."
