Max Verstappen has called Red Bull's decision to shelve its rotating rear wing ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix the "wisest" choice, after two separate incidents saw him label it "super dangerous" at Silverstone.
Red Bull abandoned the rotating rear wing for the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps following crashes for the 28-year-old in Austria and the United Kingdom, with post-incident testing revealing further issues with the component.
Although both crashes produced the same outcome, team principal Laurent Mekies has confirmed that each was triggered by a different underlying issue, underlining the complexity of the problem the Milton Keynes outfit now faces as it works towards a solution.
Verstappen accepted the decision to stand down the wing in Belgium as the right call, though he is clear that the conventional alternative carries a performance cost.
"I think it's maybe a little bit slower, but it won't turn the world upside down," Verstappen told Dutch media, including RacingNews365. "It was pretty clear to everyone that this is maybe the wisest choice for this weekend."
Despite the setbacks, the four-time F1 drivers' champion remains confident that Red Bull will resolve the matter and reintroduce the rotating rear wing in due course.
"Eventually, yes," he said. "They just have to figure out... I actually think they do know [what's causing it]; you just have to look at how you're going to find the solution. Hopefully the wing is back on as soon as possible."
With the conventional wing fitted for Belgium, Verstappen is cautious about predicting how the coming races will unfold, acknowledging that both Red Bull's own development trajectory and the moves of rival teams make it difficult to look too far ahead.
"It really depends on how we also take steps with the car and upgrades," the 71-time grand prix winner said.
You don't know what other teams are bringing, so I'm not looking too far ahead at the coming circuits. When I arrive at that specific weekend, we'll just make the best of it."
