IndyCar finds itself in bizarre situation as rain wrecks Milwaukee plans

IndyCar has found itself in a bizarre situation where it is going to start the second race at the Milwaukee Mile before the first one has officially finished - and then go on to complete the first after the second race. 

The double-header at the short one oval track was disrupted on Saturday evening when rain forced the postponement of Race 1 until Sunday morning after 90 laps of the 250 were run. 

The plan was for a resumption at 08:00 local time on Sunday morning, but early morning rain means the race will be delayed once again. It is now scheduled to start at 18:00 local time on Sunday. 

But with the double-header programme, it means Race 2 of the weekend will start, as planned at 13:00 local time, and cover the full 250 laps, which should conclude around 15:00 local time.

There is therefore a three-hour window between Race 2 finishing before Race 1 resumes.

The logistics of such a schedule mean that there is the possibility of a wrecked car in Race 2 being unable to resume Race 1, with other considerations such as engine changes or car wrappings needing to be taken into account.

Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin was one driver who was due to run two separate sponsor liveries for the two races, with the cars usually double-wrapped, meaning the livery for the second race is put onto the car first, and then covered with the livery for the first race.

After it is no longer required, the top layer is peeled away after the first race to unveil the second livery, but given the circumstances, its unclear how this will be managed.
