Max Verstappen has predicted there will be a “big upset” with the F1 pecking order this year due to the major regulation overhaul.
The F1 cars have gone through a significant change across the winter as new power unit and aerodynamic regulations take hold.
Teams put their cars through their paces during three pre-season events across the last month in preparation for the new campaign, which kicks off next weekend in Australia.
The opening round will provide some answers as to how the year ahead might play out - including the pecking order, which Verstappen believes will cause an upset compared to previous seasons.
“This year is going to be pretty insane with all the new rules as well,” Verstappen told Apple TV.
“So probably a big upset as well between teams from what you have seen the last few years.
“And a lot still unknown. Also for us, we don't know what to expect really.
“And I think that also makes it very exciting for everyone watching, not knowing, you know, what's going to happen.”
Verstappen has voiced his disapproval over the new cars, labelling them as “anti-racing” due to how much focus is needed on energy management.
However, the Dutchman acknowledged the scale of the change has created an exciting atmosphere ahead of the new season.
“It's a big change,” he said. “I mean honestly it's like the biggest change in over 10 years.
“It's exciting at the same time. As a driver as well when you have done driving like a car for quite a few years in a row, of course it evolves but the basics are the same.
“And that will change a little bit or quite a bit this year.”
