Max Verstappen has stated he expects Red Bull to spend much of the opening test session of the year in the garage.
The F1 field will descend on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from January 26 to January 30 as the first test opportunity of the year is held.
Teams will pick three days each to field their cars, which have been built under a fresh set of technical regulations.
The test is being held behind closed doors as the teams pick apart their first findings from the data.
Verstappen has suggested the test will largely see Red Bull parked in the garage, looking over initial data before heading to Bahrain for the second test with a greater understanding of the car.
“None of us have any idea about the new car or the engine,” Verstappen told Blick.
“I think that during the first tests in Barcelona starting on 26 January, we'll be spending more time in the garages than out on the track.
“Hopefully, we'll all be a bit wiser after the two tests in Bahrain in February.”
It will also signal a new era for Red Bull as the Milton Keynes-based squad enters with its own power unit for the first time.
Ford has assisted Red Bull with the development of the power unit in a season in which the engine may be a dominant factor when it comes to the pecking order.
Verstappen asserted he has no indication of how Red Bull's power unit will shape up versus the competition.
“Yes, I've been to the factory a few times,” he said. “But as I said, everyone is still in the dark.”
