Martin Brundle questions certain F1 car: 'Broken like an egg, snapped like a stick'

Martin Brundle has raised concerns over the "structural integrity" of Stake's F1 car after Gabriel Bortoleto's heavy practice crash at the British Grand Prix.

The Brazilian driver spun his C45 at Becketts, the middle part of the sweeping section of the Silverstone Circuit, after losing control during the final moments of the session.

As he careered over the kerbs and grass, the front-left suspension snapped before his car stopped just before the wall on the exit of Chapel.

It brought out a second red flag in short succession, ending the third and final practice hour two minutes early.

Former F1 driver-turned-commentator Brundle reflected on the incident in which Bortoleto was at least able to take part.

"I think wind conditions are catching him out [there]," the 66-year-old said on Sky Sports F1 at the track located on an old World War II airfield.

The Briton reflected on Bortoleto's race-ending crash on his F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix, when his Stake's rear suspension appeared to break unprompted, sending him into the wall.

In extension of the comparison, Brundle highlighted a potentially worrying weakness of the Hinwil-based team's car.

"We saw with his Sauber [Stake], the rear suspension breaking in Melbourne when he spun off before he actually hit anything with it," he said.

"I saw the car when it came back on the truck [today], and literally everything on the front left corner had broken like an egg, snapped like a stick.

"So I don't know what's going on there with the structural integrity of that, but obviously as soon as you start wiping cars sideways across kerbs...

"But it caught him out. It's the second time you said, 'He'll be very lucky the first time.'"
