Liam Lawson believes very few F1 drivers have long-term contract security, as his own future remains uncertain beyond 2025.
New Zealander Lawson is one of a number of candidates for a 2026 Racing Bulls seat with Yuki Tsunoda, Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad and Alex Dunne all in the frame, with one of these drivers set to partner Max Verstappen at the senior Red Bull team.
Lawson began 2025 as Verstappen's team-mate before his demotion to Racing Bulls after two races, and has explained how even with a long-term contract, very few drivers can feel secure in their future, as he named the one thing he can do to ensure he is on the '26 grid.
"Honestly, I think unless you are on a multi-year contract [you are not secure], and even then, Formula 1 contracts, or any contract, at the end of the day, can be broken," Lawson told media, including RacingNews365.
"The only time you're secure is when you are performing, and I don't think that there are many drivers, apart from some of the top guys, who are going to feel completely secure.
"But it is not a new feeling in any way; it is something that we are used to.
"Especially in the Red Bull programme, it is something we're introduced to at a very young age, knowing that the only way you step up through the ladder is by performing, and you have that pressure all the time."
