Lewis Hamilton has lost his seventh-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix, after incurring a penalty by the F1 stewards.
After a late stop to soft tyres, Hamilton began to carve chunks of time out of Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli ahead, nearly four seconds a lap faster at times, and was waved through by his team-mate to attack the Mercedes.
However, with three laps to, at Turn 16, Hamilton's front brakes failed, meaning he had to coast around the final laps, ceding position back to Leclerc, and finishing just 0.4s ahead of Fernando Alonso, who had been 43s behind when the brakes failed.
During these final laps, Hamilton exceeded track limits multiple times, with the stewards launching an investigation post-race.
Following the investigation, Hamilton was handed a post-race five-second time penalty for leaving the circuit multiple times, demoting the 40-year-old to eighth, and promoting Alonso to seventh.
The stewards' report read: "The Stewards heard from the team representative and the driver, reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video, team radio and in-car video evidence.
"During the hearing, the driver confirmed that he left the track at several occasions. He was trying to manage a brakes issue situation.
"This being said, after further investigation, and in accordance with the list of exemptions foreseen in the Driving Standards Guidelines, the Stewards considered that this was not a justifiable reason and apply the usual penalty for such type of infringement. This was not contested by the team representative nor the driver."
