Lando Norris explains F1 drivers' fault in call for major change

The F1 drivers' lack of enjoyment with the new-for-2026 cars has sparked suggestions they should be more involved in the decision-making process.

Lando Norris has admitted F1 drivers are “blindsided” when it comes to understanding the commercial factors behind rules and regulations.

F1's regulations this year have received criticism from various drivers, prompting a handful of meetings during April before changes were approved for the round in Miami.

The decisions were made following discussions between the teams, F1 and the FIA, with the drivers themselves having no say - something Lewis Hamilton has suggested should change.

Norris pointed out that while drivers are unanimous in what they wish to see from the cars, he acknowledged they may not be the most practical solutions.

“From first place to last place, we all want the same thing,” Norris told media including RacingNews365.

“We all just want to go flat out, race closely and at the same time, that's the show that the fans want.

“Having a seat at the table, it's something we've spoken about as the GPDA. We're all very aligned with that.

“Sometimes I think we have to accept, as drivers, we're very blindsided to the externals from a business side of things, how teams work, how all of that is organised.

“We have to accept that we're maybe not always completely correct, but I think the majority of things that we think of as drivers and what we want for the sport is a win-win.

“It's better for us and it's better for the fans, and that's our side of things.

“It's just how some of those things are done and not always able to be easily implemented, because of how the sport is as a whole, the money and the cost of things and all that, regulations, rules.

Norris asserted F1 drivers would not use the platform to voice demands, but rather to give collective feedback in an official setting.

“He [Hamilton] is completely correct,” Norris said, referring to Hamilton's suggestion that drivers should have a “seat at the table”.

“It's something that we want. It's what they have in a lot of other sports.

“It's more of just a louder voice at times, rather than 'drivers want this, why are you not doing it?'

“It's just a bit more of a say in some things and persuasion in directions into the future.

“At the minute, we don't have that. So it's more we just can't voice our opinion as much as we would like. But that's something we're working on.”
