Dino Beganovic clinched F2 feature race pole position at the Madring, with Alex Dunne going second-quickest on F1's first trip to Madrid since 1981.
Rafael Camara was third-fastest in the grid-setting session at the Spanish Grand Prix, ahead of Martinius Stenshorne and Nikola Tsolov.
Roman Bilinski, Laurens van Hoepen and Noel Leon rounded out the top eight, with Enzo Fittipaldi Jr. and Ritomo Miyata set to start the shorter, reverse-grid sprint race from the front row.
Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak was unable to take part after his fiery, red-flag-inducing crash caused a lengthy stoppage in practice, and it would not be long before qualifying was halted for the first time.
Sebastian Montoya struck the wall, damaging the right-rear corner of his car, but it was Kush Maini's spin into the barriers just after that would be deemed the sole cause of that red flag.
A second interruption happened a few minutes after the first resumption, this time due to Nico Varrone crashing at Turn 19. Both drivers stand to lose their best times.
Remarkably, PREMA managed to fix Montoya's car, but it would prove to be only temporary, with him losing drive soon after returning to the circuit.
John Bennett brought out a third red flag with just over five minutes to go, and will likely lose his best lap for the same reason as Maini and Varrone.
Colton Herta's difficult debut F2 campaign continued with a shunt right at the death, but as the red flag did not come out, he will keep hold of his P12 result.
