Kimi Antonelli has admitted it would take a "catastrophic" collapse from his title rivals for him to be crowned F1 world champion this weekend, as the Mercedes driver arrives in Austin holding a commanding 102-point lead over George Russell.
Antonelli tops the drivers' standings on 340 points after eight wins in 2026, with Russell second on 238 ahead of Lewis Hamilton (229), Max Verstappen (221), Charles Leclerc (215) and Lando Norris (201).
The United States Grand Prix runs as a standard weekend with no sprint, meaning a maximum of 25 points is on offer at the Circuit of the Americas. That makes it mathematically impossible for the title to be wrapped up before Sunday's chequered flag.
For Antonelli to clinch the championship in Austin on Sunday, he would need to win the race while his closest challenger, Russell, finishes no higher than ninth and Hamilton no higher than fourth.
Should he seal it this weekend, Antonelli, who turned 20 in August, would become the youngest world champion in F1 history, beating the record of 23 years and 134 days set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010.
Speaking to select media including RacingNews365 ahead of the weekend, Antonelli played down the prospect.
"I mean, definitely it's crazy if you think about it, but that's why I won't think about it," he said.
"Something catastrophic needs to happen to others for me to become [world champion]. For me, it needs to be a perfect weekend, and to the others, they need to do poor results, which is unlikely to happen. So, of course, anything can happen, and it's crazy to think about it."
"But as I said, we had a meeting with Bono this morning, and we just said, just have fun, just always the same mindset as I had all year, one race at a time, and yeah, just try to do the best I can every race weekend, and then we'll see. But of course, if I do things well, then the result will come."
Kimi Antonelli fully aware F1 title fight 'not over yet'
Antonelli's 2026 campaign has been a mesmeric one, particularly given how dramatically his rookie year collapsed during the European races.
Asked what it would mean to lift the title at just 20 years old, Antonelli did not hide his emotion, while insisting the job is far from done.
"It will be a dream," he said. "It's something I dreamt of since I was little. First of all, really to find myself in such a position is is incredible. But at the same time, I need to keep going, keep pushing, and it's not over yet."
"So first, we'll try to finish the job properly, and then yeah, we can enjoy the rest [of the season]. But for sure, it will be an incredible achievement. But still there's a bit to go."
