Mitch Evans topped the first practice session of the 2024 São Paulo E-Prix, in what was a factory Jaguar one-two to start the weekend.

Evans set a 1:12.555 secs on his final lap to start the fourth round on top, in what were scorching conditions.

Nick Cassidy secured P2 but was just over two-tenths behind his teammate, whilst Mahindra's Edoardo Mortara finished in third.

Briton's Dan Ticktum ended first practice in fourth, ahead of Pascal Wehrlein in fifth. As for reigning World Champion Jake Dennis, he could on salvage 13th.

Jaguar dominance

As the opening practice session got underway late on Friday afternoon, the drivers had to deal with a monster track temperature of 60 degrees Celsius, whilst the air temperature was 33 degrees Celsius.

Last season's São Paulo winner Evans was the early pacesetter in the opening 10 minutes, ahead of Robin Frijns and Nick Cassidy in a Jaguar powertrain one-two-three.

Both Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne took turns in topping the opening practice session, suggesting that DS Penske are an outfit to watch on Saturday.

Robin Frijns was fortunate not to go into the wall on the outside of Turn 7, after running extremely deep into the corner. The track continued to evolve throughout the session, with the times having dropped to the high 1:12s by the end of FP1.

After leading the opening minutes of first practice, Evans returned to the top in the closing minutes, where he remained as FP1 came to a close.

Free Practice 2 gets underway at 11:30 GMT on Saturday morning.
