34 years ago today, on 13 September 1992, the newly crowned world champion stood before the gathered press at Monza and announced he was walking away from Formula 1. Not at some point in the future, but at the end of that very season.
Nigel Mansell had just delivered one of the most dominant campaigns the sport had ever seen. Nine wins, 14 pole positions, 108 points, the title wrapped up with five rounds to spare. And yet here he was, reading from a prepared statement to a stunned media centre.
"Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have decided to retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season," read the Briton.
The reasons were rooted not in a loss of speed or desire but in politics. Mansell believed he had agreed terms with Frank Williams for a contract extension into 1993, reportedly in front of a witness.
Three days after Hungary, that picture changed. A Williams director called to inform him that, because Ayrton Senna was prepared to drive for almost nothing, the reigning champion would need to accept a massive pay cut. Mansell refused.
Behind the financial dispute lay a deeper issue: Alain Prost had reportedly already agreed to join Williams for 1993 and, having endured a fractious partnership with him at Ferrari in 1990, Mansell had no appetite for a reunion.
Just before the press conference, Williams marketing director Sheridan Thynne attempted to intervene, telling Mansell that Frank Williams had now accepted the original contract terms. Mansell acknowledged it publicly and went ahead regardless. The trust had gone.
"To my mind it comes down to fair play or the lack of it," he said.

On track, the Italian GP provided a cruel postscript. Mansell took pole, led comfortably and set the fastest lap, before an electrical failure retired him after 41 laps. Senna inherited the win, with Martin Brundle second and Michael Schumacher third.
"It is a great loss," Senna said of Mansell's departure. "We have to say goodbye to one of the greatest competitors in F1."
Williams replaced Mansell with test driver Damon Hill. Mansell, meanwhile, crossed the Atlantic to race IndyCar with Newman/Haas, winning the 1993 championship in his rookie season and becoming the only driver in history to hold the F1 drivers' title and the American open-wheel title simultaneously.
It was the most Mansell thing imaginable.
