Formula 2 The latest Formula 2 news

The FIA Formula 2 championship was conceived in 2017 as an evolution of the GP2 Series, which from 2005 had been the final step on the ladder to Formula 1. The F2 championship sees some of the finest drivers outside F1 go head to head, with each of them vying for the attention of the Formula 1 teams.

While the current format has only been in existence for four years, it has already provided the grid with a host of drivers including 2017 championship winner, Charles Leclerc, 2018 championship winner George Russell, 2018 runner-up Alex Albon, 2018 second-runner up Lando Norris as well as 2019 vice-champion Nicholas Latifi.

The championship will provide three further graduates for the upcoming season, 2020 champion Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, will race for the Haas F1 Team along with fifth-placed finisher, Russian, Nikita Mazepin. They will be joined by the highly-rated Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda who will race for Scuderia Alpha Tauri after finishing the championship in third.

The championship runs in conjunction with the majority of F1’s European calendar including the Monaco Grand Prix. The 2021 calendar however is set to break this tradition with three races being run in the Middle-East, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Abu Dhabi with the race at Azerbaijan also included.

Another key aspect of the F2 championship is the structure of the race weekend. New for 2021, a race weekend in F2 will now feature three races as opposed to two. While there will still be a practice and qualifying session on Friday, the teams and drivers will now have two shorter “Sprint” races measuring 120 kilometers or 45 mins each on a Saturday with a longer “Feature” race that includes a mandatory pitstop running on Sunday. While qualifying will set the grid for the feature race as per usual, the grid for the first sprint race will be decided by reversing the top 10 qualifying order, with the grid for the second sprint race being determined by reversing the finishing order of the first sprint race.

There are currently ten F2 on the grids with several of them serving as “junior” teams to existing Formula 1 teams, 2020 saw Prema Powerteam, which is an unofficial Ferrari junior team, take the title, with DAMS, Carlin, and the Russian Time (UNI Virtuosi) team all winning the championship.

While there are several teams in F2 the cars themselves are fundamentally spec. The monocoque and bodywork are designed by Dallara with the engine being provided with Mechachrome. The F2 cars produce a whopping 620 hp and are all turbocharged with the Pirelli providing the championship with their new 18 inch tires.

The 2021 championship is set to start in Bahrain between the 26th and 28th of March.
