FIA president issues statement as major F1 rule changes announced

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has praised the FIA and F1 teams for their "constructive approach" over the engine rule changes. 

From 2027, F1 power units are to move away from the much-criticised 50:50 power split between the Internal Combustion Engine and battery systems - a design which has left some drivers frustrated as after the battery drains, the car effectively loses half of its power.

The FIA, F1, and the power unit manufacturers have been locked in talks for weeks over changing the ratio to increase the ICE power and thus reduce the load on the batteries, with a 60:40 split as an agreed target.

For 2027, F1 engines will move to a 58:42 split before a 60:40 split is achieved in 2028, with the fuel flow to the ICE being raised by 5% and 13%, respectively, to achieve this.

The changes will be put to formal ratification by the World Motor Sport Council on June 23rd, and is expected to pass without issue. 

Following the news, Ben Sulayem thanked all parties for their efforts in working together to find a solution to the issue of the 50:50 split.
