Ferrari take 1-2 in second practice as Hamilton misses out on track time

Carlos Sainz led a Ferrari 1-2 from teammate Charles Leclerc during Saturday's second and final practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Amid warm conditions, albeit with some clouds looming, Sainz worked his way down to a time of 1:08.610 on Soft tyres to finish half-a-tenth clear of Leclerc.

With parc ferme conditions in place from the start of qualifying on Friday, FP2 did not allow the teams to make any set-up changes to their cars.

This meant the focus of the one-hour session was on tyre evaluations and longer runs ahead of the F1 Sprint race later in the afternoon.

Max Verstappen, on pole position for the Sprint, was just under two-tenths back in third, having set his best time on the Medium compound rubber.

Alpine continued their encouraging pace to take fourth and fifth with Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, ahead of Sergio Perez's Red Bull and the two repaired Mercedes cars.

George Russell was seventh, with Lewis Hamilton ninth, the pair separated by Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas, while McLaren's Lando Norris completed the top 10.

Mercedes return to the track after qualifying disaster

Much of the focus ahead of the session was on Mercedes and the "massive" repairs being carried out on Hamilton and Russell's cars.

Both drivers are running new gearboxes, along with repaired or swapped floors and wings, while Hamilton has taken on a spare chassis.

None of the changes have triggered grid penalties, with Russell and Hamilton set to start the Sprint in fourth and ninth respectively.

Russell was able to hit the track around 10 minutes into the session, promptly getting some solid lap times in, but Hamilton had a longer wait.

After a flurry of garage activity, Hamilton eventually headed out with 14 minutes left on the clock to cram in some late running in his W13.

Drivers and teams will now regroup ahead of the second F1 Sprint race of the season, which begins at 16:30 local time (15:30 BST).
