How Mercedes can win the constructors' in Mexico City
With five races remaining in the season, there are 215 points left up for grabs, meaning Mercedes' sole remaining rival, Ferrari, can score a maximum of 689 points should it score five straight one-twos - a result Ferrari hasn't achieved once in over two years.
For Mercedes to win its ninth constructors' crown in Mexico, it must leave the race with a points lead of 172 or more over Ferrari - which will be the number of points left on offer following the race.
The simplest way for Mercedes to win in Mexico is as follows, with it requiring to out-score Ferrari by 39 points or more.
- Mercedes earns a one-two finish (43) points, and Ferrari scores four or fewer points.
- Mercedes earns a one-three finish (40) points, and Ferrari scores one point or less.
For Mercedes to win the constructors', it must have both its cars on the podium, with one of them winning the race. A two-three result would only yield 33 points, six below the minimum 39 points it must score.
