F1 teams have 'total' trust in Pirelli over crucial 2024 rule

The teams are confident that Formula 1's tyre manufacturer can come to a solution for a potential rule change for 2024.

Formula 1 teams have reiterated their 'total trust' in Pirelli to make a decision on whether they will go forward with tyres that do not require blankets in 2024. The FIA looks poised to introduce a tyre blanket ban once a decision is made after a test at Silverstone next month. Banning tyre blankets has been on F1's radar for a while, but now there is a serious effort from the sport's tyre supplier, the teams, FIA and itself to come to a solution as part of its pledge to become carbon neutral. A test in Barcelona took place after the Spanish Grand Prix, which enabled Pirelli to measure a lot of parameters of their 2024 tyre at low temperatures. Aston Martin Performance Director, Tom McCullough, said the Wet tyres briefly used at the recent Monaco Grand Prix without blankets is an example of their confidence Pirelli can meet the numbers they require to make it work. "We trust Pirelli totally," McCullough told media, including RacingNews365.com . "They are developing and have introduced the full wet at Monaco, which is quite a hard circuit to get tyres working. "We fully trust and support that program and I think they're taking the steps of only introducing stuff when it's working well."

Ferrari: Teams head into tyre tests blind

Over 600 laps were completed in the latest test at Barcelona between both Mercedes and Ferrari. Ferrari team engineer, Jock Clear, explained that while teams head into the 'blind' Pirelli tests without any data, they know their objectives. "We do these tests blind effectively - and that's the way it should be - so we don't know what we're going to get," said Clear. "We know what the programme is, but we don't actually know what those differences are, but we know the objectives. "Pirelli have shown already that they're pretty much on top of getting to where they want to go. All the Pirelli tests we've done have ended up with good improvements in whatever area they're focusing on."
