F1 fans have emphatically rejected the idea of the ill-fated double-points season finale being reintroduced.
In 2014, F1 first ran the concept at the year-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but due to its unpopularity, it proved to be a one-off.
It comes in the wake of Max Verstappen taking the title fight almost out of the grasp of Lando Norris. With three rounds to go, including the Qatar Grand Prix sprint, the McLaren driver trails the reigning champion by 62 points with a maximum of just 86 up for grabs.
Part of the opposition to the solution is that it could artificially alter the destination of the F1 championships, with that sole grand prix ultimately deciding the fate of an entire season if results went a certain way.
A decade ago, the constructors' title was already decided, but the drivers' championship was still being contested between Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
The former led heading into the final round, and won there, too, as the latter retired from the race.
This meant there was no double-points provoking swing in who emerged victorious in the first of three championship fights between the pair.
Nevertheless, F1 fans are not keen to see the rules reappear. In a recent poll conducted by RacingNews365, over 84% of respondents said they would not support the reintroduction.
Furthermore, one person remarked that F1 has bigger issues to worry about than Verstappen likely winning the title before the final round of the year.
"No, it turns less like a sport and more like a quiz show that always offers double money at the end of the final round," commented Paul Woodthorpe.
"I think the points system is fine as it is, and with so many issues with the stewarding of the sport at the moment I think there are bigger things that are ruining the sport than seeing someone crowned champion before the final race of the season."
